Isle of arran from dunmure
Ducklings in september!!
Illfracombe
We had 2 weeks holiday so we booked a caravan and headed off to the devon countryside as weve never been there before and we were really looking forward to 2 weeks off work...great. Took 10 hrours driving..took us an hour just to drive 7 miles trying to get past bristol it was a nightmare!! but never mind.
Arrived at the farm where we'd booked our van but there was no-one there so i rang the owner (she was out and about?) but she said the key was under the mat at bottom of stairs. So after being attacked by 4 manic sheepdogs we went into the caravan...O.M.G !!! this mustve been built in 1900 and blonk! it was disgusting to say the least, damp, dirty and uninhabitable...so needless to say hubby refused to stay...moeny down the drain.
Cutting a long story short we had to pay £90 for a hotel room for the night as hub was knackered after all that driving - room was tiny but hey it was clean and dry...but when we got up next morning to shower to go for brekky the bathroom had flooded overnight! ...anyway we went off for breakfast and it was vile!, swimming in grease..awful..not the best start to the day and another 10 hour drive home.
But when we got home late that night i went onto the internet and booked a short break in ayr in a place weve been to before, so off we went again the next morning...arrived - got our keys, went to settle in only to find the place was filthy it hadnt been cleaned...unbelievable!! so after some too-ing and fro-ing we eventually got settled in.
Down the road a couple of miles theres a lovely little harbour village called dunmure and on a clear day there you can see across to the isle of arran... but it is a really great place for sea watching - gannets, manx shearwater, cormorants and terns. We even saw little mallard ducklings - very unusual for september ???
Gloomier and wetter........and the weather wasn't much better!

Another misty day with almost constant rain. A SE breeze.

I checked the waterline on the incoming tide this afternoon (Malcolm). For
a while...

What an experience! It would be smart to have a guide for all types of Devon accommodation and tourist information so that you won't have a problem like that or miss beautiful places like Dunmure. It's good that Devon holiday guides are now online for inquiries.
